We recently had a special visitor, when Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon, came to the Museum. Sue Welch, Chairman of the Nidderdale Museum Society CIO showed him round and was very impressed. He commented that it was ‘a fascinating example of a volunteer-led museum, with a real treasure trove of items illustrating the history of Nidderdale’. His entry in the visitors’ book reads ‘Fascinating! Must see!’ One item of particular interest was the list of ‘Rules to be Observed by All Police Constables’. Rule 22 states that ‘Ignorance is an insuperable bar to promotion’. We did ponder on whether that could also be applied to politicians!
