This booklet explains how the results of geological and climatic changes have been utilised by man to develop the stone extraction industry in Upper Nidderdale, which has had such a major part to play, not only in the economic and social life of the dale, but also contributed to the development and growth of towns and cities and their industries in this country and elsewhere. Although the booklet was prepared to complement a special display held in the museum in 1993 it continues to be a worthwhile read on its own.
